925 silver stamp vs BIS hallmark in India
Check the difference between a 925 stamp and India’s BIS silver hallmark, including the current HUID format and date-aware verification.
In this article
A 925 number communicates a claimed silver fineness. A BIS hallmark includes additional marks and a verification system. In India, silver hallmarking remains voluntary, while HUID is mandatory for silver articles that are hallmarked under the scheme introduced on 1 September 2025. This distinction was clarified in the government’s December 2025 update. Official HUID update.
Look for the complete current mark
Under IS 2112:2025, the silver hallmark has three components: the BIS Standard Mark with the word SILVER, a purity grade, and a Hallmarking Unique Identification code. The standard lists seven grades: 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990 and 999. A hallmarked silver article therefore need not be 925; read the actual grade. BIS October 2025 explanation.
The six-character alphanumeric HUID can be entered in the BIS Care app. The resulting record includes purity, article type, the submitting jeweller and the Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. Compare those details with the item and the seller’s account rather than accepting a screenshot without checking the code yourself. Government verification instructions.

Allow for the date of the marking
The previous IS 2112:2014 format used the BIS mark with SILVER, fineness, an assay-centre identification mark and a jeweller or manufacturer identification mark. The 2025 revision changed the format and the grades. An older piece needs a date-aware discussion; the absence of today’s format alone does not establish its history. Official description of the transition.
For a piece described as newly BIS hallmarked, ask the seller to show the complete marks clearly and provide its HUID. If a mark is difficult to read, request a sharp close-up or view the piece in person. Record what the seller says about when it was hallmarked. Keep the invoice and that explanation together. Official marking transition.
Resolve a mismatch before you commit
Use a simple purchase check: write down the advertised purity, the purity mark you can read, and the purity returned by the app. Add the article type and the seller’s explanation of any difference. This is a comparison tool, not a substitute for an assay. If the accounts do not line up, pause the purchase and ask the seller or BIS to resolve the discrepancy.
Hallmarking concerns metal purity and traceability. It does not answer your separate questions about gemstones, coatings or construction. BIS describes the hallmarking centre’s role as examining the article and applying the mark when the relevant Indian Standard requirements are met. BIS scheme explanation.
For gold, use the separate gold-hallmark verification guide; its grades and purchase checks need their own context.
For the meaning of the number itself, read 925 sterling silver. Keep the alloy and plating distinction alongside the hallmark check when a piece has a coated surface. This India guide was checked on 3 October 2026; confirm current BIS guidance again when buying.
