Silver alloy vs silver plated jewellery

Read silver alloy, plated and silver-filled descriptions clearly. Separate the metal body, surface coating and product-specific care.

In this article

An alloy combines metals in the material itself. Plating is a layer applied to a surface. CIBJO’s terminology separates a precious-metal alloy from a precious-metal coating. A piece can have both, such as an alloy body with another metal on top. CIBJO definitions.

Start with the material underneath

Sterling silver describes silver content of at least 925 parts per thousand under US jewellery guidance. Silver-plated material needs a description that makes the coating clear; calling a coated base-metal item sterling would misdescribe the body. These US definitions are a terminology reference here, not a statement of India’s hallmarking law. US silver-content guidance.

On an imaginary product page, “gold-plated sterling silver” supplies two different facts: the underlying sterling and the applied gold layer. “Silver-plated brass” would identify a brass body and a silver surface. Use this reading exercise to locate the underlying material in a description. If it is missing, ask for it before comparing pieces. Silver-content and coating terminology.

Painted cutaway blocks distinguish a combined alloy body from a surface coating around an inner body.

Ask about the coating as a coating

Gold plating can wear away. The rate depends on how the piece is worn and on the layer’s thickness. A gold-coloured surface photograph cannot supply those details. Ask for the coating specification and the seller’s care instructions instead of treating colour as evidence of solid gold. FTC plated-jewellery explanation.

Rhodium is another possible surface layer on precious-metal jewellery. Its presence should be stated clearly; US guidance addresses disclosure even when the underlying item is already described as precious metal. Rhodium surface-layer guidance.

Silver filled needs its own explanation

Silver-filled stock has silver bonded onto a different metal substrate. Rio Grande’s technical bulletin describes its own layered stock and gives the silver proportion by weight. “Filled” does not mean that the entire body is sterling. Ask what the term means for the actual item rather than treating it as another spelling of plated or sterling. Silver-filled technical description.

For your comparison notes, request the body metal, every coating, the components covered, and the aftercare instructions. Add a separate line for any refinishing service the seller offers, including its cost and limitations. Those are questions to resolve for the product you are buying; this guide cannot promise that a particular piece can be replated.

If different components have different descriptions, use the mixed-metal materials guide. When the concern is a dark or changed surface, read silver tarnish and wear before trying to polish the colour away.
