What is 925 sterling silver

Learn what 925 sterling silver means, what the fineness number covers, and which finish and component details to confirm before buying.

In this article

Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver. The number 925 expresses that silver content as 925 parts in every thousand. The remaining proportion consists of other metals. This describes a silver alloy, a metal mixture, rather than a thin silver layer over a different core. FTC silver terminology.

Why other metals are included

In traditional sterling, copper is used to make silver harder and more useful for jewellery. Fine silver is softer. Recipes can vary between producers, so the number 925 identifies silver content without naming every other ingredient. Ask for the alloy specification if a particular metal matters to your choice. A sterling component can also carry a surface coating. For example, rhodium may be applied over a precious-metal article; US jewellery guidance specifically requires that surface layer to be disclosed. Treat the underlying metal and its coating as separate entries when reading a description. Rhodium disclosure guidance.

Try this reading exercise with an imaginary pendant. Put “925 sterling silver” in a column headed metal. Put “rhodium coated” in a second column headed surface. Put the stone name in a third. You now have a useful outline for a seller to complete. Do not fill empty boxes from a photograph or from the title of a collection.

Use the same approach for the chain, clasp and setting. Ask the seller to identify any component that differs from the main metal description. A written answer such as “pendant and chain in 925 sterling silver, clasp details supplied separately” is easier to check than a broad label covering an entire photograph.

What the number does not establish

A fineness number measures precious-metal content by weight. It does not describe how the jewellery was made or provide a care procedure. The distinction between metal composition and a surface layer is set out in CIBJO metal terminology.

For an India purchase, take the marking question to 925 stamps and BIS hallmarks. Keep your buying notes specific: the stated metal, the components covered by that statement, the finish, and the seller’s written confirmation. If you are comparing purities for a design, fine silver and sterling silver explains why the job of the component matters.

Cleaning depends on the complete item. GIA warns that a cleaner suitable for a metal may still damage a gem or another material in the jewellery. Get instructions for your particular finish and stones before choosing a polish or soaking method. GIA cleaning cautions.
