How to find your ring size: measurements and fit checks

Separate ring diameter from finger circumference, record the intended finger and seller chart, and check the actual design before ordering.

In this article

Measure for the finger and hand on which you intend to wear the ring. Keep the measurement beside the seller’s own size chart, then check the proposed ring’s fit before committing. A size copied from another ring or another seller needs verification.

Keep the two measurements separate

Inside diameter is the distance across a ring’s opening. Circumference is the distance around the finger. Tanishq describes two starting methods:

  1. For an owned fitting ring, measure across the opening from inside edge to inside edge.
  2. For the intended finger, wrap a non-stretch strip around its base. Mark where it overlaps, lay it flat and measure the marked length. Match that circumference to the seller’s chart.

Tanishq measurement guide

Write the unit and measurement name in full. “Inside diameter in millimetres” gives the seller more to check than an unlabelled number. Ask which sizing system their listing uses. Do not substitute a chart simply because it is labelled Indian, US or UK.

If you use a printable guide, check its calibration instructions before using the circles or strip. This article does not provide a conversion chart. Ask the seller to confirm the measurement against the current chart for the actual ring.

An 18 mm inside diameter corresponds mathematically to about 56.5 mm around the same circle: circumference equals π times diameter. This is not a finger-size recommendation.

Use an owned ring carefully

Choose an owned ring that fits the intended finger. If its opening is distorted or difficult to measure, ask a jeweller to assess it. Record the finger and measurement with a photograph. Tanishq fitting reference

A hypothetical example shows the distinction: an everyday ring fits your right ring finger, while the new piece is intended for your left middle finger. The existing ring can be a design reference. Its size should remain an open question for the new purchase.

Check the complete wearing arrangement

Tell the seller about the proposed band’s width and inner profile. Ask whether the fitting appointment or return terms let you check that design rather than only a narrow sample ring. For several rings worn together, use the ring-stacking guide to organise a separate check of the whole arrangement.

Before ordering, your record should identify the intended finger, measurement method, unit, seller’s size label and any unresolved fit question. If the result is uncertain, arrange in-person sizing. Keep tightening, reshaping and resizing work with a jeweller.
