How to check recycled silver jewellery claims
Check what a recycled silver claim covers, how its percentage is defined, and which documents connect the claim to the finished piece.

A useful recycled-silver claim identifies the material, the proportion being claimed and the product or component it covers. India’s CCPA environmental-claims guidance calls for credible substantiation and clear disclosure of the aspect concerned, such as a product, manufacturing process or packaging. A general green message leaves important buying questions open. Official environmental-claims explanation.
Define what recycled means in this claim
The RJC’s 2024 Chain of Custody standard distinguishes pre-consumer material from manufacturing or unsold products, post-consumer material from end-user products, and material derived from waste. The standard excludes investment material from these categories. It requires a clear category declaration and evidence for any stated proportions. These are defined categories within that standard, not interchangeable labels for every seller’s claim. RJC recycled-material requirements.
Ask the seller to name the definition or standard used. Then ask whether the stated percentage concerns the silver content, the entire metal alloy, a named component or the whole finished piece. Put the answer beside the claim you first read. You should not have to guess the denominator of a percentage.
Follow the evidence to this product
Chain of custody means a documented sequence of custody as material moves through a supply chain. RJC certification has a defined entity and facility scope, and its product claims have requirements of their own. A membership logo alone is insufficient detail for evaluating a specific product’s recycled claim. RJC scope and claims provisions.
For a comparison exercise, imagine that a supplier’s letter covers sheet used for a pendant body. You still need the seller to state whether the chain and clasp fall within the same claim. Keep a separate entry for each component. An unanswered entry is a question to resolve, rather than proof that the claim is false.
Useful documents might include a material declaration tied to the supply transaction, the relevant certification scope or the seller’s product-specific explanation. Ask how the evidence connects to the item you intend to buy. A certificate for an organisation and a statement for a batch answer different questions; keep both dated and labelled. Keep environmental conclusions proportionate
Recycled content alone does not establish every environmental or social outcome. RJC guidance calls for defined boundaries when calculating environmental impacts and warns against unsubstantiated claims. It also requires attention to sourcing risks in recyclable materials. Ask for separate evidence if a claim goes further into carbon impact or responsible sourcing. RJC guidance on recycled materials.
Before choosing, write a one-sentence version of the claim using the seller’s confirmed scope. If you cannot say which material and which part it covers, the explanation is incomplete. Use the mixed-metal materials list to organise those component questions. For gemstone sourcing, the responsible-sourcing evidence guide addresses a different part of the jewellery.
